How is Acupuncture Used?

Acupuncture is an integrative therapy used to restore the flow and balance of energy in the body by stimulating condensed areas of nerves and blood vessels, known as neurovascular bundles. This stimulation, produced by placing very fine needles at these areas, causes mild inflammation, which triggers nerve regeneration and the release of healing and pain-relieving chemicals, including endorphins.

What to Expect from Your Pet’s Acupuncture Treatment

Cat Acupuncture

If you elect to try acupuncture for your pet, we will first help you set up an initial consultation where Dr. Albrecht conducts a through physical exam and reviews your pet’s health history. Expect questions about your companion’s current condition, and what goals you are hoping to achieve through acupuncture. This appointment is also a time for us to answer your questions, and set your expectations for future visits. Then, we will work with you to develop a treatment plan specific to your pet’s needs.

Acupuncture treatments vary in length based on your pet’s condition and how well they tolerate the needles and respond to treatment. Furthermore, acute conditions can be treated with fewer sessions, while chronic problems will require roughly 3-5 sessions, or more. For pain-related issues, we often see improvement after the first session, with further improvements after each new treatment. Results are cumulative, and over time, we can gradually space out their appointments.
